FAQ AKA WTF IS TSP DIY?
We’re back. TSP DIY is a global, decentralized event from The Speed Project. Starting at 4AM PDT on September 4, 2021, teams and solo runners will have
31 hours and 15 minutes 29 hours and 51 minutes (the standing LALV record) to run as many kilometers as they can, relay-style. Teams choose their own routes, and members can run legs from anywhere in the world.
The TSP DIY experience will include a custom training plan, a pre-race Time Trial, live leaderboard, inclusion in the TSP DIY Livestream, access to exclusive gear, and a complete digital journey. While supplies last, teams can also opt into a physical Starter Kit containing fuel and nutrition from Maurten, gear, and other surprises for the race.
HOW DO I REGISTER?
Only captains and solo runners need to complete the registration form, so recruit your teams and grab your spot.
OK. WTF IS “TSP DIY”?
TSP DIY is a decentralized event, taking the ethos of The Speed Project to the extreme. Rather than choosing their own route from LA to Vegas, each team* chooses their own route or location, anywhere in the world.
WHAT’S DIFFERENT THIS YEAR?
First, keep reading. Second, we learned that TSP DIY is defined by you, and we are evolving the race this year to give voice and visibility to the teams and runners designing their experiences. We’re also finding ways to build and expand this community, to create the most inclusive and accessible race we can. And, one other tiny detail: we’ve been deep in development on our timing and tracking platform to avoid any technical difficulties.
Third, we're launching MAKER HUBS this year: leaning into the decentralization of the race, these experiences host a field of teams around a strong focus for their community. Learn more and register to participate in a HUB.
WHAT ABOUT COVID?
That’s why TSP DIY is decentralized - we want every runner in the world to be able to participate without barriers of travel or location restrictions. We ask all teams to follow local protocol for their runs, any gatherings, and celebrations.
HOW DO I WIN?
Teams will have
31 hours and 15 minutes 29 hours and 51 minutes (the standing LALV record) to run as many kilometers as they can, relay-style (or as a solo runner). When the clock hits 29:51, the team with the most miles wins #TSPDIY.
Our competitive categories are: Solo Runner, OG Team (2 women, 4 men), Women’s Team (6 women), and Freestyle (as many runners as you like).
WHAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR?
What didn’t happen last year? We saw teams race head to head for hours on end, and the current TSP DIY records are up for grabs:
- OG team: 560km
- Women’s Team: 433km
- Solo Runner: 211km
What happens this year?
WHAT IS “RELAY-STYLE”?
Just like TSP, no two runners on a team run at the same time. Come on, you know what a relay is.
HOW ARE YOU TRACKING THE KILOMETERS?
Or miles, depending on where you’re from? We're working with Virtual Baton App to make sure every step is logged and that our leaderboard shows live updates throughout the 29:51 of the race. Really, though. Time and distance are logged via each athlete's own personal tracking watch or device:
- Download Virtual Baton App
- Enter your unique team access code
- Link Virtual Baton App with your device
- As you or your team races, upload your run segments and Virtual Baton App will aggregate your team distance. Relay teams can run segments of any length, in any order

DOES MY TEAM HAVE TO BE IN THE SAME CITY?
No. Have you even been reading this? Different team members can be in as many places in the world as they’d like. It’s a decentralized event.
WHATEVER. HOW MUCH DOES THIS COST?
Registration is $55 per runner and includes a custom TSP DIY training plan, a pre-race Time Trial, live leaderboard, inclusion in the TSP DIY Livestream, access to exclusive gear, and a complete digital journey.
WHAT ABOUT STARTER KITS?
Right. Teams and solo runners can reserve a TSP DIY Starter Kit containing elements of an at-home journey leading up to, during, and after the race. In addition to the digital experience, Starter Kits include fuel and nutrition from Maurten, exclusive TSP DIY gear, and other surprises for the entire TSP DIY experience.
While supplies last, Starter Kits are included in your registration cost; team captains will be responsible for shipping fees and taxes, to be paid at the time of shipment.
DO YOU NEED MY T-SHIRT SIZE?
No. Sit down.
WHEN DOES REGISTRATION CLOSE?
It closes when it closes. Starter Kits are available on a first come, first serve basis.
KK. WHEN IS TSP DIY?
TSP DIY begins at 4AM PDT / 7AM EDT / 1PM CET on Saturday, September 4th, 2021, ending at 9:51AM PDT / 12:51PM EDT / 6:51PM CET on Sunday, September 5th, 2021, at which point the decentralized pool parties can begin.
HOLD UP. YOU SAID “POOL PARTIES.”
We did. It’s a metaphor. Become a TSP DIY MAKER: a captain who hosts your own event for your crew, community, or region, setting your own route, race, course, competition, and celebrations within TSP DIY’s 29h51m. We’ll get you what you need, you make it happen the way you want, on your home turf. Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org to become a MAKER.
I HEARD THERE WAS A CHARITY COMPONENT TO TSP DIY?
That is correct. Last year, we launched the TSP Fund, raising $90K to support six partners working at the intersection of running and racial justice. We’re scheming ways to build on this pilot and make TSP DIY a multiplier for the difference we can make as a community.
LFG. HOW’S THIS WORK?
Registration is now open. #NOSPECTATORS
